3 Ways to Avoid Overdoing it This Holiday Season

By Melanie Thomassian R.D. on Nov 24, 2010

Can a single meal trigger a heart attack?

According to researchers, a huge meal similar to what many eat at Thanksgiving or Christmas, can actually set the stage for a heart attack, in those at risk for heart disease.

The study of 1,986 heart attack patients in 2000, suggested that an unusually large meal quadrupled the chance of having a heart attack within the next two hours.

Dr. Lopez-Jimenez said this,

Overeating should be considered as a heart attack trigger, much in the same way as extreme physical activities and severe anger episodes may cause an MI... People at risk for a heart attack should be careful not only about the total caloric intake they eat every day, but the size of individual meals as well.

So, if you tend to eat way to much at this time of year, here are 3 ways avoid overdoing it this holiday season:

1. Downsize Your Serveware
Most people will eat everything that is pilled onto their plates, regardless of whether it's more than they need to feel satisfied. So, eating from a salad plate is a good way to control this.

Studies have also shown that people eat as much as 56 percent more when they serve themselves from a one-gallon bowl, rather than a half-gallon one. So, if you plan to serve your Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner from large bowls in the centre of the table, try using smaller serving dishes, as a way to encourage everyone to eat a little less.

This idea works with glassware, too. Large gobblet-shaped glasses can hold up to one third of a bottle of wine. However, people fail to realize just how much alcohol they are consuming from these supersized glasses.

If you drink alcohol, limit your intake to just one small glass of wine. As for juices and soft drinks, they are simply empty calories -- you would be better sticking with water, and saving up the calories for something tastier later on.

2. Portion Control
As an extra way to check that your food portions aren't too big, here are some guidelines: fill half your dinner plate with non-starchy vegetables, then one quarter with starchy carbs, and one quarter with lean meat, or alternatives.

3. Indulge -- but just a little!
Personally, I enjoy dessert way too much to avoid it. If you are the same, pass on the drinks pre-dinner, the bread roll and butter with your entree, and also that extra scoop of potatoes at dinner. Then you can easily enjoy a small piece of cheesecake, guilt-free and without too much sacrifice.

If all else fails, and you end up eating enough to feed a tiny country, get back on the healthy eating handwagon right away, and then get some exercise. There's no point slacking off just because it's the holidays. When you do that, you set yourself up for a long slippery road back to where you were pre-vacation. It's not worth it!

The Major Key to Your Better Future Is YOU by Jim Rohn

http://www.jimrohn.com/index.php?main_page=page&id=1292&utm_source=jrn-8_23_10&utm_medium=email&utm_content=toparticle&utm_campaign=ezines

Of all the things that can have an effect on your future, I believe personal growth is the greatest. We can talk about sales growth, profit growth, asset growth, but all of this probably will not happen without personal growth. It's really the open door to it all. In fact I'd like to have you memorize a most important phrase. Here it is: "The major key to your better future is YOU."

Let me repeat that. "The major key to your better future is YOU." Put that someplace you can see it every day, in the bathroom, in the kitchen, at the office, anywhere you can see it every day. The major key to your better future is YOU. Try to remember that every day and think about it. The major key is YOU.

Now, there are many things that will help your better future. If you belong to a strong, dynamic, progressive company, that would help. If the company has good products, good services that you are proud of, that would certainly help. If there were good sales aids, that would help, good training would certainly help. If there is strong leadership, that will certainly help. All of these things will help, and, of course, if it doesn't storm, that will help. If your car doesn't break down, that will help. If the kids don't get sick, that will help. If the neighbors stay halfway civil, that will help. If your relatives don't bug you, that will help. If it isn't too cold, if it isn't too hot, all those things will help your better future. And if prices don't go much higher and if taxes don't get much heavier, that will help. And if the economy stays stable, those things will all help. We could go on and on with the list; but remember this, the list of things that I've just covered and many more—all put together—play a minor role in your better future.

The major key to your better future is you. Lock your mind onto that. This is a super important point to remember. The major key is you. A friend of mine has always answered when asked, "How do you develop an above-average income?" He says, "Simple. Become an above-average person. Work on you." My friend says, "Develop an above-average handshake." He says, "A lot of people want to be successful, and they don't even work on their handshake. As easy as that would be to start, they let it slide. They don't understand." My friend says, "Develop an above-average smile. Develop an above-average excitement. Develop an above-average dedication. Develop an above-average interest in other people." He says, "To have more, become more." Remember: work harder on yourself than you do on your job. For a long time in my life, I didn't have this figured out.

Strangely enough, with two different people in the same company, one may earn an extra $100 a month, and the other may earn $1,000. What could possibly be the difference? If the products were the same, if the training was the same, if they both had the same literature, the same tools. If they both had the same teacher, the same compensation plan, if they both attended the same meetings, why would one person earn the $100 per month and the other person earn the $1,000?

Remember: here is the difference... the difference is personal, inside, not outside, inside.

You see the real difference is inside you. In fact, the difference IS you. Someone once said, "The magic is not in the products. The magic is not in the literature. The magic is not in the film. There isn't a magic meeting, but the magic that makes things better is inside you, and personal growth makes this magic work for you."

The magic is in believing. The magic is in daring. The magic is in trying. The real magic is in persevering. The magic is in accepting. It's in working. The magic is in thinking. There is magic in a handshake. There is magic in a smile. There is magic in excitement and determination. There is real magic in compassion and caring and sharing. There is unusual magic in strong feeling, and you see, all that comes from inside, not outside. So, the difference is inside you. The real difference is you. You are the major key to your better future.

Also, my husband got started only a week and a half ago and he's down 12 lbs too (boo at how fast men lose weight compared to women! lol) and I haven't denied him ANY of his favorite foods, he's naturally pulled away from SOME and his portions have been cut in half, literally. Don't Lose Money!

By: Brian Tracy
www.briantracy.com

Throughout the history of American enterprise, you've heard the words, "work hard and save your money." Work hard and save your money. It is the oldest rule for success in America. It's so important, as a matter of fact, that W. Clement Stone once said, "if you cannot save money, then the seeds of greatness are not in you."

Saving Is a Discipline
Why is it that saving money is so important? Because saving money is a discipline and any discipline affects all other disciplines in your life. If you do not have the discipline to refrain from spending all the money that you earn, then you are not qualified to become wealthy and if you do become wealthy, you'll not be capable of holding on to it.

The Law of Attraction
A principle with regard to saving your money is the law of attraction. The law of attraction is activated by saved money. Even one dollar saved will start to attract more money. Here's what I suggest that you do. If you're really serious about your future, go down and open a savings account. Put as much money as you can into it, even if it's only ten dollars. And then begin to collect little bits of money, and every week go down and put something into that account.

Attract More Money Into Your Life
You will find that the more you put in that account, the more you will attract from sources that you cannot now predict. But if you do not begin the savings process, if you don't begin putting something away towards your financial independence, then nothing will happen to you. The law of attraction just simply won't work.

Invest Your Money Conservatively
Once you begin to accumulate money, here's another rule. Invest the money conservatively. Marvin Davis, self-made billionaire, was asked by Forbes Magazine, "How do you account for your financial success?" And he said, "Well, I have two rules for financial investing." He said, "Rule number one is, don't lose money." He said, whenever I'm tempted, whenever I see an opportunity to invest where there's a possibility I could lose it all, I just simply refrain from putting the money in. Rule number two is, whenever I get tempted, I refer back to rule number one. Don't lose money.

Get Rich Slowly
George Classon says, in The Richest Man In Babylon, that the key is to accumulate your funds and then invest them very conservatively. One of the characteristics of self-made millionaires, one of the characteristics of old money in America is that it's very cautiously, conservatively and prudently invested.

Don't try to get rich quickly. Concentrate rather on getting rich slowly. If all you do is save ten percent of your earnings, put it away, and let it accumulate at compound interest, that alone will make you wealthy.

Action Exercises
Here are two things you can do to apply these lessons to your financial life:

First, open a separate savings and investing account today. From this day forward, put every single dollar you can spare into this account and resolve to never touch it or spend it for any reason.

Second, whenever you consider any investment of your savings, remember the rule, "Don't lose money!" It is better to keep the money working at a low rate of interest than to take the chance of losing it. Be careful. A fool and his money are soon parted.

LIFE ON PURPOSE

By Dr. Brad Swift

"All is in Divine Order and working perfectly even when it doesn't at first glance look like it. Take this economic crisis -- while it may not match our preferences for how we'd like it to be, it's the perfect outcome to expect when you have a small number of ego-centric people hungry for power and run by greed making the decisions and policies while everyone else casts a blind eye of ignorance and complacency." Brad Swift from meditation.

While participating in John Randolph Price's 40 Day Prosperity Plan which includes meditating each day and then journaling, the above statement flowed from my pen. Upon reflecting on it later, it felt true and worthy of expanding upon. For years I've used the affirmation, "All is in Divine Order so I flow with what's flowing," especially during those times that it didn't look or feel like Divine Order was present.

Now, I see that those times may have gone against the grain of my preferences, but were consistent with the thought and emotional patterns that preceded the times. And if we are not awake and aware, it is easy to perpetuate the undesired conditions through worry, doubt, fear, and lack-based thinking. The realization that "all is in Divine Order" is a perfect point from which to pivot to a new reality, perhaps even to a reality that is both in Divine Order and more consistent with our preferences, especially when those preferences are aligned with the greater good of all concerned.

============= Applying it to Daily Life =============

While this may be an interesting observation and thought process, how do we apply it to our everyday lives?

May I suggest the following:

1. Notice a time or situation that may not appear to be in Divine Order or that doesn't match with your preferences. Maybe it's something as simple as rushing around to get yourself to work, then walking out to the car only to find one of your tires is flat?

2. How, you might ask, could a flat tire that's going to make you late for work be in Divine Order? And that's exactly what I invite you to do -- ask this question of your Inner Guidance. See if you can ask it, not from a place of upset and frustration but with an authentic sense of curiosity. "Wow, this sure doesn't look or feel to be in Divine Order. So, I'm curious, how might this be in Divine Order?

3. Then be open to receiving input. As possible answers come, check in to see which feel most empowering, and don't be surprised if there's more than one, since often Divine Order has multiple ways of serving.

Here are some possible responses to the above scenario: "This is God's not so subtle way to suggest I slow down and pay more attention. The car was pulling to that side yesterday on the drive home. If I hadn't been in such a rush, I'd known to check the tires. "This is God suggesting to me to learn to be more comfortable in reaching out for support from others. I know I could still make it to work on time by simply calling Joe to swing by and pick me up.

Now, the question is, "will I allow another to support me like that?" "This is Divine intervention suggesting to me that today is not a day to work. That I've been putting in a lot of overtime and it's time for a bit of rest and rejuvenation time. I'll go inside and call AAA to have the tire fixed and take one personal day for me. This way, I'll be much more effective in my work upon returning."

Remember, to look for which responses feel right, and that appear to point you to the 'greater good of all concerned.' Follow that guidance and see where it leads.

If You Don't Lose Weight Your Finances Will

by Jennifer Openshaw
Wednesday, April 21, 2010provided byhttp://www.marketwatch.com/news/default.asp?siteid=yhoo&dist=yhooSnapshotLoghttp://www.marketwatch.com/news/default.asp?siteid=yhoo&dist=yhooSnapshotLog
Studies show normal-weight folks earn more money and have more savings
You have to admire Michelle Obama for taking on an issue that can turn off millions of Americans, who themselves are overweight. From better food labels to more money for healthier foods in schools, the First Lady is taking on the issue with a vengeance, tackling the problem from many corners.
But there's another, big reason that each and every parent should get rid of excess weight and teach their kids good eating habits: our financial futures.
Now, you might argue that eating at McDonald's is a lot cheaper than making burgers from scratch -- and it does save you time -- but that's hardly a reason to run for the Golden Arches.
Now, mind you, I love good things. People call me a foodie. But I try to battle the bulge with modifications here and there and a lot of exercise. As a friend once said, echoing my thoughts, "I exercise so that I can have dessert."
So if you're wondering if you should put your kids on a diet -- even if you can't seem to tighten your own belt -- then consider these costs that will add to their financial security - or lack of it - over time:
Food. By definition, someone who's overweight is consuming more calories. I don't care what it is, but another 1,000 calories with a high concentration of fat -- say, just one brownie sundae with whipped cream -- can cost you another $6. And that doesn't count the bags of chips and god knows what else. That $6 a day you munch consumes a whopping $143,000 from your nest egg over 30 years, assuming just a 5% annual return.
Illness. According to a Rand study, obese people spend 36% more on health services than people who are normal weight -- everything from co-pays to prescription drugs. That's no surprise. Overweight and obese people tend to suffer from a higher incidence of chronic disease, including musculoskeletal disorders. The result? "Recovery from any given injury or illness is likely to be more difficult and more expensive than for normal-weight individuals," says Claire Wilkinson, director of global insurance issues for the Insurance Information Institute. That means more physical therapy, more time off the job and higher medical bills overall.
Life Insurance. Looking to protect your kid if something happens to you? It'll cost you more if you're heavy. The longer you're likely to live, the lower the chance that an insurance company will have to make a payout on a claim. Obese people live on average 7 years less, so life insurers have to account for such differences in their underwriting. "For this reason, life insurance for overweight and obese people generally costs more than for normal-weight people," says Wilkinson. "Insurance companies take into account a lot of different factors when they're quoting you with a rate," she adds. "Things like family history, healthy weight, and whether you exercise regularly may enable you to qualify for a more favorable rate class." In group life insurance plans, while age, smoking and even gender can impact rates to individuals, obesity isn't used as a factor, at least not yet.
Earnings, Net Worth and Marriage. You've heard the studies that show better looking people earn more. Being thin helps too. A study by the Ohio State University Center for Human Resources Research found that the obese accumulate only about half the net worth of non-obese Americans, and gender and ethnicity make a big difference. Overall, a one-point increase in body mass index dropped net worth by $1,300. But wealth increases are nonlinear; that is, a 10-point change from a highly overweight reading means much more. (by the way, to learn more about BMI and calculate yours, go here http://www.nhlbisupport.com/bmi/. Now for earnings: The Ohio State study found that a typical woman earned $314 less annually for every one-point increase in BMI while a male counterpart earned $161 less. Another study by a New York University sociologist found that, for women, a 1% increase in BMI led to a 0.6% decrease in income, a 0.4% decrease in job "prestige" and a 0.35% decrease in the likelihood of marriage. To keep this simple, assuming this is true, just a one point increase in a man's BMI could lead to a drop in savings over 30 years by as much as $10,700 (assuming a 5% annual return if these earnings were not otherwise lost), while for a woman, a savings impact of over $20,000.
It's easy to blame fast-food giants like Kraft and McDonald's for the obesity issue. But it all really starts with good habits. And that comes mostly from Mom and Dad.

Bad habits can age you by 12 years, study suggests

http://www.ap.org/ http://www.ap.org/
By LINDSEY TANNER, AP Medical Writer - Mon Apr 26, 3:03 PM PDT
CHICAGO - Four common bad habits combined — smoking, drinking too much, inactivity and poor diet — can age you by 12 years, sobering new research suggests.
FILE - In this Tuesday, June 3, 2008 file photo, an employee takes a drag on a cigarette at Morgan's Place bar and restaurant in Harrisburg, Pa. Four common bad habits combined — smoking, drinking too much, inactivity and poor diet — can age you by 12 years, sobering new research suggests. (AP Photo/Carolyn Kaster, File)
The findings are from a study that tracked nearly 5,000 British adults for 20 years, and they highlight yet another reason to adopt a healthier lifestyle.
Overall, 314 people studied had all four unhealthy behaviors. Among them, 91 died during the study, or 29 percent. Among the 387 healthiest people with none of the four habits, only 32 died, or about 8 percent.
The risky behaviors were: smoking tobacco; downing more than three alcoholic drinks per day for men and more than two daily for women; getting less than two hours of physical activity per week; and eating fruits and vegetables fewer than three times daily.
These habits combined substantially increased the risk of death and made people who engaged in them seem 12 years older than people in the healthiest group, said lead researcher Elisabeth Kvaavik of the University of Oslo.
The study appears in Monday's Archives of Internal Medicine.
The healthiest group included never-smokers and those who had quit; teetotalers, women who had fewer than two drinks daily and men who had fewer than three; those who got at least two hours of physical activity weekly; and those who ate fruits and vegetables at least three times daily.
"You don't need to be extreme" to be in the healthy category, Kvaavik said. "These behaviors add up, so together it's quite good. It should be possible for most people to manage to do it."
For example, one carrot, one apple and a glass of orange juice would suffice for the fruit and vegetable cutoffs in the study, Kvaavik said, noting that the amounts are pretty modest and less strict than many guidelines.
The U.S. government generally recommends at least 4 cups of fruits or vegetables daily for adults, depending on age and activity level; and about 2 1/2 hours of exercise weekly.
Study participants were 4,886 British adults aged 18 and older, or 44 years old on average. They were randomly selected from participants in a separate nationwide British health survey. Study subjects were asked about various lifestyle habits only once, a potential limitation, but Kvaavik said those habits tend to be fairly stable in adulthood.
Death certificates were checked for the next 20 years. The most common causes of death included heart disease and cancer, both related to unhealthy lifestyles.
Kvaavik said her results are applicable to other westernized nations including the United States.
June Stevens, a University of North Carolina public health researcher, said the results are in line with previous studies that examined the combined effects of health-related habits on longevity.
The findings don't mean that everyone who maintains a healthy lifestyle will live longer than those who don't, but it will increase the odds, Stevens said.

The Ant Philosophy by Jim Rohn

http://www.jimrohn.com/

Over the years, I’ve been teaching kids about a simple but powerful concept: the Ant Philosophy. I think everybody should study ants. They have an amazing four-part philosophy.

Here is the first part: Ants never quit. That’s a good philosophy. If they’re headed somewhere and you try to stop them, they’ll look for another way. They’ll climb over. They’ll climb under. They’ll climb around. They keep looking for another way. What a neat philosophy—to never quit looking for a way to get where you’re supposed to go.

Second, ants think winter all summer. That’s an important perspective. You can’t be so naive as to think summer will last forever. So ants gather their winter food in the middle of summer.

An ancient story says, “Don’t build your house on the sand in the summer.” Why do we need that advice? Because it is important to think ahead. In the summer, you’ve got to think storm. You’ve got to think rocks as you enjoy the sand and sun.

The third part of the Ant Philosophy is that ants think summer all winter. That is so important. During the winter, ants remind themselves, “This won’t last long; we’ll soon be out of here.” And the first warm day, the ants are out. If it turns cold again, they’ll dive back down, but then they come out the first warm day. They can’t wait to get out.

And here’s the last part of the ant philosophy. How much will an ant gather during the summer to prepare for the winter? All he possibly can. What an incredible philosophy, the “all-you-possibly-can” philosophy.

Wow, what a great philosophy to have—the ant philosophy. Never give up, look ahead, stay positive and do all you can.

MY FRIDAY STORY

~Anonymous~

Several times my daughter had telephoned to say, "Mother, you must come to see the daffodils before they are over." I wanted to go, but it was a two-hour drive from Laguna to Lake Arrowhead "I will come next Tuesday", I promised a little reluctantly on her third call.

Next Tuesday dawned cold and rainy. Still, I had promised, and reluctantly I drove there. When I finally walked into Carolyn's house I was welcomed by the joyful sounds of happy children. I delightedly hugged and greeted my grandchildren.

"Forget the daffodils, Carolyn! The road is invisible in these clouds and fog, and there is nothing in the world except you and these children that I want to see badly enough to drive another inch!"

My daughter smiled calmly and said, "We drive in this all the time, Mother." "Well, you won't get me back on the road until it clears, and then I'm heading for home!" I assured her.

" But first we're going to see the daffodils. It's just a few blocks," Carolyn said. "I'll drive. I'm used to this."

"Carolyn," I said sternly, "please turn around." "It's all right, Mother, I promise. You will never forgive yourself if you miss this experience."

After about twenty minutes, we turned onto a small gravel road and I saw a small church. On the far side of the church, I saw a hand lettered sign with an arrow that read, "Daffodil Garden." We got out of the car, each took a child's hand, and I followed Carolyn down the path. Then, as we turned a corner, I looked up and gasped. Before me lay the most glorious sight.

It looked as though someone had taken a great vat of gold and poured it over the mountain peak and its surrounding slopes. The flowers were planted in majestic, swirling patterns, great ribbons and swaths of deep orange, creamy white, lemon yellow, salmon pink, and saffron and butter yellow. Each different-colored variety was planted in large groups so that it swirled and flowed like its own river with its own unique hue. There were five acres of flowers.

"Who did this?" I asked Carolyn. "Just one woman," Carolyn answered. "She lives on the property. That's her home." Carolyn pointed to a well-kept A-frame house, small and modestly sitting in the midst of all that glory. We walked up to the house.

On the patio, we saw a poster. "Answers to the Questions I Know You Are Asking", was the headline. The first answer was a simple one. "50,000 bulbs," it read. The second answer was, "One at a time, by on e woman. Two hands, two feet, and one brain." The third answer was, "Began in 1958."

For me, that moment was a life-changing experience. I thought of this woman whom I had never met, who, more than forty years before, had begun, one bulb at a time, to bring her vision of beauty and joy to an obscure mountaintop. Planting one bulb at a time, year after year, this unknown woman had forever changed the world in which she lived. One day at a time, she had created something of extraordinary magnificence, beauty, and inspiration. The principle her daffodil garden taught is one of the greatest principles of celebration.

That is, learning to move toward our goals and desires one step at a time--often just one baby-step at time--and learning to love the doing, learning to use the accumulation of time. When we multiply tiny pieces of time with small increments of daily effort, we too will find we can accomplish magnificent things. We can change the world ...

"It makes me sad in a way," I admitted to Carolyn. "What might I have accomplished if I had thought of a wonderful goal thirty-five or forty years ago and had worked away at it 'one bulb at a time' through all those years? Just think what I might have been able to achieve!"

My daughter summed up the message of the day in her usual direct way. "Start tomorrow," she said.

She was right. It's so pointless to think of the lost hours of yesterdays. The way to make learning a lesson of celebration instead of a cause for regret is to only ask, "How can I put this to use today?"

Use the Daffodil Principle. Stop waiting.....

Until your car or home is paid off
Until you get a new car or home
Until your kids leave the house
Until you go back to school
Until you finish school
Until you clean the house
Until you organize the garage
Until you clean off your desk
Until you lose 10 lbs.
Until you gain 10 lbs.
Until you get married
Until you get a divorce
Until you have kids
Until the kids go to school
Until you retire
Until summer
Until spring
Until winter
Until fall
Until you die...

There is no better time than right now to be happy.
Happiness is a journey, not a destination.
So work like you don't need money.
Love like you've never been hurt, and, Dance like no one's watching.

If you want to brighten someone's day, pass this on to someone special.
I just did!

Wishing you a beautiful, daffodil day!

Don't be afraid that your life will end, be afraid that it will never begin.

http://www.in.gr/news/article.asp?lngEntityID=1122198&lngDtrID=252

Associated Press

http://www.in.gr/news/article.asp?lngEntityID=1121228&lngDtrID=252

Associated Press

Childhood Obesity Prevention

Childhood Obesity Prevention Is Focus of Global Nutrition Transition Conference
ORLANDO, Fla., Mar 16, 2010 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- The obesity epidemic is spreading among children, not just in the US, but worldwide, and preventive measures - with an emphasis on a low fat diet and regular activity - should be implemented during the first two years of life.

This was a key message during the second and final day of discussions among physicians and nutrition scientists at the Global Nutrition Transition Conference in Orlando, Fla. Today's speakers included Dr. Bill Lands, noted expert on dietary fats; Harry Greene, MD, Emeritus Professor of Pediatrics at Vanderbilt University; Dr. Marco DeAngelis, professor of exercise science at the University of L'Aquilla, Italy; and Nobel Laureate Dr. Louis Ignarro.

The two-day conference brought together leading experts from around the world to address the impact of the Nutrition Transition - dramatic shifts in diet and exercise patterns in developing countries - that has led to unprecedented increases in the incidence of overweight and obesity in adults and children worldwide.

In the United States, obesity rates in children have quadrupled in the last 25 years. And, along with globalization of the economy, "the unhealthy diet and lifestyle habits of industrialized nations are becoming global, too," said Greene.

Not only are adults affected but the incidence of childhood obesity is soaring worldwide. "In the UK, childhood obesity rates have increased by 0.5 percent per year for the last 10 years, and in countries like China, where obesity was virtually unknown 15 years ago, rates are rising similarly," notes Greene.

As a result, children are experiencing the same obesity-related diseases as adults - such as type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure. But the difference between children and adults is that, in children, there is a shorter time interval between the onset of obesity and the development of obesity-related diseases. "Obesity-related diseases that may take 10 years or more to develop in adults can appear as early as 3-5 years after the onset of obesity in children," adds Greene.

Scientists say that prevention tactics are critical, since obesity can set in firmly as early as age five. In fact, research suggests that the most critical period for prevention of obesity may be during the first two years of life.

"If we could prevent childhood obesity, this generation would witness a 50 percent reduction in obesity as adults," said Greene.

Key tactics for obesity prevention include a healthy low fat diet with an emphasis on healthy fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins - along with limited amounts of sweets. Establishing the breakfast habit and limiting meals eaten away from home are also important - but more difficult for time-challenged families.

Regular meal times, fewer unhealthy snacks, and setting aside time for regular exercise and adequate sleep are all critical factors, too. But, says Greene, "the real challenge will be to help families find ways to provide their children with a healthy diet while meeting their demands for tasty, convenient foods."

The two-day Conference is being sponsored by Herbalife. Drs. DeAngelis and Ignarro are members of Herbalife's global Nutrition Advisory Board.

Some years ago I attended a self-improvement seminar and the speaker was Jim Rohn. He said, "Everything matters in life, some things a little and some things a lot, we just don't know which is which." And I believed him.

Now if I may, I would like to relate a personal experience which occurred when I was a motorcycle officer that strengthened this belief and taught a young man that everything in life does indeed matter.

I was a motorcycle officer with the Los Angeles Police Department and I was working speed complaints out of West Traffic Division. On the 6th of January, 1986, I was working a speed complaint on one of the streets in the hills of Bel Air. It was around 9:30 in the morning. I was stopped at the base of a hill and had set up my radar on the handlebar of my motorcycle and was watching the traffic coming down the hill.

This was a residential area and the road was narrow with numerous curves and was posted at 25 miles per hour. I had just finished writing a couple of tickets when I heard the audio on the radar, looked up the road and saw a small sports car coming down the hill. I glanced at the digital readout on the radar unit and saw that the car was traveling close to 50 miles per hour. I stepped out into the street and waved the driver over to the curb.

The driver was a young man in his early 20's on his way to UCLA for a morning class. I told him why I had stopped him and started to write him a ticket. He, of course, didn't want the ticket and tried to talk me out of it. His name was Christopher and he was a good kid. But he was trying his best to get me to not write him a ticket. Never rude, always polite, but determined to convince me to let him go.

We bantered back and forth, he would raise his voice in support of his position, but I calmly explained why he should get the ticket. When he saw I was still going to write him the ticket, he asked me, "What If I had not stopped, you were not on your motorcycle, would you have chased me?" I replied, "Most likely not".

About this time, I heard the audio on the radar and noticed that the digital readout registered 52 miles per hour. I looked up and saw a young man coming down the hill on a motorcycle. I stepped out in front of him and waved him into the curb. He was going too fast and passed us, but he was slowing down. I walked towards the motorcycle rider and my back was to Christopher.

The motorcyclist had turned around and was coming back to me. The he suddenly made a quick U-turn and sped down the hill. I turned around and walked back to Christopher and said, "Well, one got away."

He said, "I waved him on".

I said, "What?"

He said, "I waved him on."

I replied, "Oh, no! You should not have done that."

He had a puzzled look on his face and asked, "Why not, it won't matter?"

I told him everything in life matters, some things a little and some things a lot. We just don't know which is which. The look on Christopher's face clearly indicated to me that he did not believe me. I finished the ticket and we talked a little more about life and philosophy, then Christopher went to class and I went to court.

Three days later, I was back working that same area and had three cars stopped. While I was writing the tickets, I noticed that a car coming up the hill had stopped across from me. There were three or four guys in the car. It was obvious to me that they were waiting to talk to me.

I finished the last ticket and the driver of the car got out and walked over to me. He had a very sad look about him. I could tell something was bothering him. As he approached me, he asked, "Do you remember me?"

"Yes," I replied, "you are Christopher."

He then said, "You taught me a valuable lesson the other day when you told me that everything in life matters. I didn't believe you then, but now I do."

"How do you mean?" I asked.

"Do you remember the boy on the motorcycle?" he asked.

"Yes," I replied, "I do remember him."

"Well," he said, "he was my roommate and that is why I waved him on. I thought I was helping him. After he turned around he made a wrong turn and went down a street, which ended in a cul-de-sac and hit a large planter in the center of the cul-de-sac. He died instantly. You were right when you said everything in life matters."

I was shocked and found it hard to believe, even though I had been with LAPD for 18 ½ years. We talked for a few more minutes. I expressed my sorrow, we shook hands and then we both left.

I rode to the station in Venice and looked up the traffic reports for the 6th of January and sure enough there it was. I still could not believe it. I mentioned what had happened to another officer whose was in the station at the time. His response was that the kid deserved to die for fleeing the scene; I thought this cannot be happening; I don't want to be like him.

As police officers and especially motor officers we are suppose to be saving lives, not pleased because some kid made a bad decision and died. Over the next several days I gave a lot of thought to this situation and my life in general. I decided I didn't want to be a police officer anymore and I needed a change. So I resigned in February 1986 after 18 ½ years with LAPD to pursue my passion, network marketing.

I thought that I should listen to my own advice about how everything matters and look at this situation as an opportunity to make some serious changes in my life. I've never regretted leaving LAPD even though my business plans didn't quite work the way I had hoped back in 1986. But over the years they have and I have had a successful network marketing business since 1995.

Could now be the time for you to make a life change? If it is, I would encourage you to do so. Based on my experience you will not be sorry. I will be 68 in September 2010, I'm in great health and could not be happier.

The Parable of Talents By: Brian Tracy

http://www.briantracy.com/

The Parable of the Talents is the primary reason for wealth or poverty throughout history.

Reasons for Rich or Poor
Why do some people retire rich and most people retire poor? This subject has fascinated philosophers, thinkers, mystics and teachers throughout the ages. There have been so many cases of hundreds or thousands and even millions of men and women who have started with nothing and become financially independent that people are naturally curious to know why it happened and what are the common rules or principles that others can apply to become wealthy as well.

Why People Become Rich
One illustration of this key principle is called the parable of the talents. In the Bible, it says, "To him that hath, shall more be given, and he shall have abundance. But from him that hath not, even that which he hath shall be taken away."

Accumulation Leads to More Accumulation
What does it mean? In the modern world, we say "the rich get richer and the poor get poorer." The fact is that people who accumulate money tend to accumulate more and more. People who don't accumulate money seem to lose even that little bit of money which they have. Why should this happen? The great success principle, the single idea that explains human destiny is simple. It says that, "you become what you think about, most of the time."

Control Your Thoughts
And whatever you dwell upon, grows in your reality. You create your entire world by the things you choose to think about and how you choose to think about them.

It just so happens that wealthy, successful people fill their minds with thoughts, words, pictures and images of wealth, affluence, success, productivity and solutions to problems in the marketplace, most of the time. These thoughts trigger the reticular activating cortex, the part of the brain that makes you more alert and sensitive to things that you have decided are important to you.

Activate Your Reticular Cortex
For example, if you decide to invest in a mutual fund, you will start to see news and information about mutual funds everywhere. Mentions in newspapers and magazines will jump out at you. These notices have always been there but now you have sensitized your brain to pick them up and draw them to your attention with far greater frequency and vividness. This is the function and power of your reticular cortex.

Avoid Poverty Thinking
On the other hand, what do poor people think about most of the time? Unfortunately, poor people fill their minds with thoughts of scarcity, lack, poverty, being unable to afford things. They are always thinking and talking about how little money they have, how much things cost and how they wish things could be better financially. What they think about most of the time is how little money they have.

Think Like Wealthy People Think
Wealthy people from an early age think about how much they have, how much they want and all the different things they can do to acquire and earn the money and things they desire.

Find Out How Rich People Think
Here's a rule for you. If you want to become successful, find out what failures do and don't do it. If you want to be wealthy, find out what poor people think about, and avoid thinking in those ways. Instead, find out how wealthy people think. Find out what they read. Find out how they spend their time. Study their lives, read their stories and autobiographies and listen to their words when they are interviewed and on tape. The more you find out what financially successful people think and talk about most of the time, and do the same things, the more rapidly you will enjoy the same rewards that they do.

Action Exercises
Here are two things you can do to put this parable of the talents into action:

First, make a decision today that from now on you will think and talk only about the financial success that you desire. At the same time, you will refuse to talk about or dwell upon your financial problems.

Second, instead of saying, "I can't afford it," instead ask the question, "How can I afford it?" When you think of something that you want or need that you don't have the money for at the time, the only question you ask is, "How?" How can you get it? What can you do to achieve it? What are your options? How can you get from where you are to where you want to go? This type of attitude will change your life.

ARISE AND REBUILD By William Baldwin

Nehemiah 4:2 "Will they revive the stones from the heaps of rubbish-stones that are burned?" I was only a boy, maybe ten years old, when I was awakened on an unusually warm autumn night by the siren of the local volunteer fire department. Mom in her nightgown, Dad in his boxers, and me in my racecar pajamas stood in our back yard watching flames lick the starlit sky. It was an eerie sight. The largest, most prestigious house in our very middle class community was on fire.

The next morning Dad and I walked down the road to check out the damage. Our neighbors, who beat us to the scene, were already gawking at the white, two-story icon, now a smoldering pile of ruins. The chimney still stood like a "Washington Monument "to its former glory. It was hard for me to believe. Such a stately house, the nicest on our little street, was a heap of coals. I watched trails of smoke still rising from blackened wood and stone. The ornate furniture, up-to-date appliances, and beautiful woodworking were completely charred.

You know, houses aren't the only thing susceptible to catch fire and burn. People get burnt too. I'm sure some of you have been burned, haven't you? The stories are similar. With a promising future you walked into life with confidence. Then, like the big white house in my neighborhood, an unexpected catastrophe occurred and you were seared by life's flames. Burnt. Unrecognizable.

You watched as smoke rose from what was left of yesterday's optimism and prosperity. This wasn't supposed to happen. It wasn't part of the plan. You're not the first one to experience such heartache. Nehemiah experienced the adversity of being burned. The hometown he and his people revered had been completely destroyed by fire. Jerusalem's wall, the spiritual emblem of national strength and dignity was torched. By his own admission he was overcome with grief as he recalled its former glory.

What makes the devastation worse is in knowing what once was. Remembering how great things were makes the present misfortune feel all the more hopeless. It's a lot like staring at the biggest house in your community lying in a pile of ashes. We all have mental photos, flashbacks of our life before we were burned. There's the daddy pushing you in a swing, a mother cooking, a happily married occasion, a healthy child, and a younger you. Likewise, you see the college degree you never finished, the friend who hurt you, the prayer that wasn't answered, a worthless 401(k) with no retirement benefits, and the pink-slip from the company you invested your life in.

Smoldering histories, they're reminders of the great fire, that catastrophic event when you were burnt. The question arises, "What now?" When Nehemiah heard about his beloved Jerusalem he was overcome with sorrow. His mind pulled up the photos of better days, the way God intended things to be, and he just couldn't handle his emotions. Can you hear his anguish? "I sat down and wept, mourned, fasted and prayed" (Neh 1:4).

Nehemiah's emotional response is predictable, but what he did next was not. While Nehemiah prayed, he stumbled onto praying the answer. "Give your servant success TODAY" (Neh 1:11, emphasis mine). When you spend time calling out to God sometimes you pray the answer, if even by mistake. He knew he couldn't go back to the innocent years when the wall was first built, but he could use what he was left with "TODAY."

From that prayer, Nehemiah determined to rebuild the wall with the rubbish of its former glory. I imagine Nehemiah rummaging through the debris of the old, burned down wall, picking out burnt, but usable stones to rebuild with. It took some work, but he and a handful of faithful, tenacious men rebuilt the city wall using burnt stones from yesterday's tragedy. Scripture records, "The wall was built" (Neh 7:1). Using "leftovers", Nehemiah built a new wall that restored hope to his people and gave glory to God.

You thought you could never again be used as you once were. Ever since your "fire", you declared you would not trust again, teach again, work again, speak again, write again, or love again. You've said that that chapter in your life had closed. Well, maybe it's time to think again. Burnt stones are not only usable, they're desirable.

Years after the neighborhood mansion had been leveled by fire I was invited into the new house the family had rebuilt. I was about sixteen years old when I walked through the front door into a large living room that was designed around the most beautiful fireplace I had ever seen. It was made from unusual looking, dark colored stones that rose to the ceiling, mounted with a stunning mantel made from some sort of darkened wood. It was built to overwhelm you when you walked into the room, and that it did! "Whoa!" The words jumped out of my mouth before I realized it. The owner smiled and said, "Everybody likes the fireplace. The stones came from what was left over from the fire six years ago. And the mantelpiece is made from several floor beams that didn't completely burn up."

Amazing how something so beautiful can be built from scorched wood and burnt stones. You need to know that God uses burnt stones. The Lord searches through the fragments of our hardships, picking up the scraps He can use again. He helps people who have been burned to get up and rebuild their dreams and fulfill their destiny. And today, of all the people on the planet, He's chosen you, burnt, but still beautiful. Don't you think the time has come for you to arise and rebuild?

The Laws of Money

January 22, 2010
http://www.briantracy.com/catalog/product.aspx?pid=13&cid=2

One of your major goals in life should be financial independence. You must aim to reach the point where you have enough money so that you never have to worry about money again. The good news is that financial independence is easier to achieve today than it has ever been before.

The Law of Abundance
We live in an abundant universe in which there is sufficient money for all who really want it and are willing to obey the laws governing its acquisition. People become wealthy because they decide to become wealthy. People are poor because they have not yet decided to become rich.

The world is full of thousands of people who have had far more difficulties to overcome than you could ever imagine, and they've gone on to be successful anyway. So can you.

The Law of Exchange
Money is the medium through which people exchange their labor in the production of goods and services for the goods and services of others. The amount of money you earn is the measure of the value that others place on your contribution. To increase the amount of money you are getting out, you must increase the value of the work that you are putting in.

The Law of Capital
Your most valuable assets, in terms of cash flow, are your physical and mental capital—your earning ability. How much time you put in and how much of yourself you put into that time largely determine your earning ability. Time and money can be either spent or invested. If you invest your time or money in becoming more knowledgeable and better skilled, you can increase your value.

"WARNING! - Offer Ends Tomorrow
Discover The #1 Way To Increase Your Income In Any Economy"
Most people don't make enough sales because they don't know how to overcome their prospects' objections. With a proven system you could be easily making an additional $25,000 to $125,000 each month in income. It's the strategy we've used here at Brian Tracy to increase our sales. Step-by-step guidance to increased sales!
Discover the fastest way to ramp up your income.

The Law of Time Perspective
The most successful people in any society are those who take the longest time period into consideration when making their day-to-day decisions. Your ability to practice self-mastery, self-control, and self-denial, to sacrifice in the short term so you can enjoy greater rewards in the long term, is the starting point of developing a long time perspective.

The Law of Saving
Financial freedom comes to people who save 10 percent or more of their income throughout their lifetime. Savings today are what guarantee the security and the possibilities of tomorrow.

The Law of Conservation
It's not how much you make but how much you keep that determines your financial future. The true measure of how well you are really doing is how much you keep out of the amount that you earn.

The Law of Three
There are three legs to the stool of financial freedom: savings, insurance, and investment. One of your major responsibilities, to yourself and to the people who depend on you, is to build a financial fortress around yourself over the course of your working lifetime. To be fully protected against the unexpected, you require liquid savings equal to two to six months of normal expenses.

The Law of Investing
Investigate before you invest. This is one of the most important of all the laws of money. You should spend at least as much time studying a particular investment as you do earning the money to put into that particular investment. The only thing easy about money is losing it. If you think you can afford to lose a little, you're going to end up losing a lot. Invest only with experts who have a proven track record of success with their own money.

The Law of Magnetism
The more money you save and accumulate, the more money you attract into your life. The Law of Magnetism has been written about for more than 5,000 years. It explains much about success and failure in every area of life, especially in the financial arena. The more positive emotion you associate with your money, the more opportunities you will attract to acquire even more.

Action Exercise
Take time every day, every week, and every month to reflect on your financial situation and look for ways to deploy your finances more intelligently. The more time you take to think intelligently about your finances, the better decisions you will make and the more money you will have to think about.

Great Goals Make You Stretch!

MY FRIDAY STORY

Great Goals Make You Stretch!
by Fran Briggs

I met my alternate self three months shy of my 40th birthday as I struggled with clinically-diagnosed depression. During this same period, I was challenged, immensely by the debilitating effects of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and being rendered permanently partially disabled as the result of being involved in two car accidents in six days (neither of which was I at fault).

I recall an incredible sense of emptiness and a daunting feeling of being completely overwhelmed; especially when trying to figure out which pills went with what "ills." I was unable to return to the vocation I loved. That hurt more than my pain. Most of my time was spent in bed where I eventually became 48 pounds "over-fat."

When dreams and reasons for living are wiped out by the greatest, of the least unexpected, most people priorities typically change. My priorities? Well, they just disappeared. I was defeated physically, emotionally, psychologically, spiritually and knocking on "Financially's" door. Making the bed was not a priority; it simply went unmade. And when it came down to paying the bills, many went unpaid.

One day I was moved enough to actually cultivate the emotion of being "fed up!" During this awakening, I made the decision to reclaim complete responsibility for my life. And I did. 37 months post accident's, I went to work on my mind, body, and spirit. I studied, and applied everything that would enhance these areas. It wasn't long before I was 51 pounds lighter, and at least 52 times brighter.

Following my "awakening" I set goals to become an author, speaker, consultant, and educator. I quickly established myself in each discipline and began to promote and practice life-altering strategies. My approach was innovative, strategic, fun, proven and desired-results focused. Paramount to enhancing my personal energy level was to identify, outline and writing down my physical goals.

Returning to playing competitive softball, being the team's starting short stop and winning the league championship were my top three goals. I promised myself I would return to play softball at a competitive level if it killed me. It almost did! Playing softball on several teams simultaneously left me limping around with a blue, pain-alleviating ointment. I had soreness in muscles I never even knew existed! Nevertheless, by season's end I had accomplished all of my goals. I figured, if I could overcome all of my physical, spiritual and psychological ailments, discovered how to run faster; jump higher; throw farther; look younger, stay up longer - manifest twice as much energy than I did when I was a "starting" NCAA athlete half my age - anyone else can do the "undoable," too! Whatever the "undoable," may be.

As I continued following a disciplined program to attain goals in every area of my life, something just short of magical happened. My personality sparked with a resurgence of charisma, confidence and boldness. My muscles grew stronger, my energy increased and the fat melted off my body. Taking part in an activity not only became easier, but quite enjoyable. Suddenly, I was living life as I had designed.

Great goals make you stretch. They absolutely can take you well beyond anything you could possibly imagine! The most important part of setting great goals is not the goals themselves, but the person you become in the stretch.

The Top 25 Network Marketing Companies by Michael S. Clouse (www.nexera.com/top25/)

Who are the Top 25 Network Marketing Companies? Well, it really depends on how you define the
"Top 25..." As you might imagine, the truth can be a bit subjective. Let me explain...
The best-selling car in the World is the Toyota Corolla. Apparently it's a great car, and yet at the
same time probably not the car of your dreams. Which begs the question, "Does an MLM company
deserve a higher ranking simply because more people are involved?" It's a fair question. Here's what
we know for sure: Popularity is definitely one of the best ways to determine what's going on in the
marketplace. It plays a part in the movies we see, the music we download, and sometimes even
where we invest our money.
So is the "Top 25..." just an online popularity contest? Not exactly. To make a fair assessment we
gave consideration to things that really don't matter; for instance, 24 of the 25 companies are
members of the DSA, and things that really do matter, like Time In Business!
In short, we wanted you to know the exact criteria we used in order to select, and then to rank,
"The Top 25..." You may agree with our findings, or you may not; we welcome your thoughts and
opinions either way. Here's the Nexera Five-Factor Formula we used to make our selections:
1) The company must be a self-described Network Marketing, Multi Level, or MLM company.
2) The company must be in business for at least 10 years as of January 1, 2009.*
3) The company must have a Google Page Rank - GPR. A scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being best.
4) The company must have an Alexa Rank - AR. Here the smaller the number the better.
5) The company must show up in Google Trends - GT. All Regions. Last 12 months.**
The five factors above are taken into account at the end of each quarter and then a ranking decision
is made. As of December 31, 2009, the Top 25 Network Marketing Companies are:
Company Time In Business GPR - AR - GT
*Why 10 years? Because that amount of time really seems to matter. For example, according to
research, since 1957 thousands of different MLM, Multi Level, or Network Marketing companies have
opened their doors; and to date only 50 MLM companies have found a way to celebrate their 10th
anniversary and still remain in business today. Now, to be completely fair, we should also point out
that each and every company on our list was at one time a start-up company too.
**For purposes of comparing Internet search term interest using Google Trends (GT), all 25
companies were compared to the term, MLM. A score of 1.00 would indicate the same level of
Internet search interest; anything above 1.00 more interest, anything below 1.00 less interest.
A few noteworthy points on this list... The only companies considered for this list are U.S.A. based;
and if you click on each and every company linked above, what you will not find should be as
interesting to you (and as revealing) as what you will find. There are no travel companies, only one
technology company (ACN), just two services companies (Pre-Paid Legal and AmeriPlan), and 23
health and wellness companies. Even Amway, whose core product line still includes soap, really got
started by way of the wellness revolution! Read this book by Paul Zane Pilzer and you'll understand
why skincare, nutrition, and weight management products continue to drive the trends in this
industry to this day.
Lastly, if the company is publicly traded, and seven are, we have linked their year in business above,
in red, over to MarketWatch for a real time stock quote and other financial information.
All the best,
MSC
P.S. Network Marketing continues to gain in popularity throughout the world. By some estimates
there are currently over 1,000 different companies to choose from, and yet the truth is the vast
majority of these companies will never survive to celebrate their 10th anniversary. As I wrote in,
Future Choice: Why Network Marketing May Be Your Best Career Move, "This week, 175,000 people
will find a new way to increase their financial security and personal freedom. They will join more
than 57 million others who are earning a living, full- or part-time, through Network Marketing."
Therefore, if you are one of those people looking into Network Marketing, and would like to learn

Mario Andretti: A Glass Half Full for the Indy 500 and Formula One Champion

Mario Andretti: A Glass Half Full for the Indy 500 and Formula One Champion
Mario Andretti is breaking his own personal records of success off the speedway.
Stephanie Smith December 29, 2009
You could say Mario Andretti's reputation precedes him. Driving down the highway, a young trooper pulls him over. So, maye he was speeding just a little. "Who do you think you are?" the trooper asks. "Mario Andretti?" The answer of course is, "Yeah," when you really are Mario Andretti, a professional race car driver like no other, a man officially clocked driving 234.275 miles an hour, a man who saw 111 checkered flags in a career spanning five decades.
Not only is Andretti considered the most successful race driver ever, but also the most versatile, winning the Indianapolis 500, Daytona 500, Formula One World Championship and the Pike’s Peak International Hill Climb.
Retired from racing since the mid-1990s, Andretti, 69, has pursued other passions in business, with ventures including the Mario Andretti Racing School in Las Vegas, the Andretti Indoor Karting and Games facility near Atlanta and the Andretti Winery in Napa Valley.
Yet his name remains synonymous with speed. A dozen books have been written about him, and he’s mentioned by name in more than that many songs by artists as varied as Gwen Stefani, the Charlie Daniels Band and the Beastie Boys. Andretti sums up his mass name recognition modestly: “A lot of it is that I’ve been around so long. I’ve been fortunate.”
RICHES EVEN IN POVERTY
Fortune didn’t always smile on Mario Andretti, though. Born in 1940 in Montona, Italy, his father was a prosperous farm manager. But at the end of World War II, surrender terms required Italy to cede the Istrian Peninsula, where the Andrettis lived, to neighboring Yugoslavia. After three years trying to adapt to the communist country, they decided to flee. For the next seven years, the family of five lived in a refugee camp northwest of Florence, Italy, sharing a single room, partitioned with blankets, with several other families.
In 1955, the Andretti family immigrated to the United States. They had only $125 when they settled in Nazareth, Pa., where Andretti still lives with wife, Dee Ann, his former English tutor whom he married in 1961.
Andretti feels no bitterness about those camp years. He was a child and he didn’t know to want anything more, he says. In many ways, he was infl uenced more by the rich experiences he enjoyed than the poverty and hardships of his youth. He’s maintained that glass-half-full attitude throughout his life.
It was during those early years that he developed a passion for opera and, of course, racing. His exposure to opera came with free tickets given to his father, who worked as an extra. Today, music by Verdi (“the most dramatic expression of human emotion,” Andretti says) plays on his Web site.
Andretti’s love of cars also stems from childhood. He remembers frightening old ladies as he and twin brother Aldo raced wooden buggy carts down Montona’s hilly streets when they were 7. His passion deepened as an adolescent during Italy’s racing heyday, with its gleaming, sexy Ferraris, Maseratis and Alfa Romeos. He remembers watching pro races with his brother, particularly Formula One and the Mille Miglia, a 1,000-mile lap of Italy.
A WINNING BUSINESS PLAN
Andretti stepped away from his racing career in the mid-1990s, at age 54. He had seen some of his colleagues overstay their welcome and didn’t want to continue to compete if he couldn’t do it well. “I’ve always said I didn’t have a Plan B in life. I was in pursuit of my dream from the very beginning. It’s all about desire and passion. At all costs.”
So it wasn’t a Plan B, but more like Act II when Andretti launched his post-racing career. He translated his winning racing plan to business: Surround yourself with the top people in the field, make sure they have the necessary tools to do their jobs, go out there to win each time and don’t fear failure. He was never a conservative driver and he goes pedal-to-the-metal in business as well. “If everything is under control, you’re not going fast enough,” Andretti says.
He’s the first to admit he doesn’t know everything about making wine, but he has a 53-acre vineyard in California’s Napa Valley. And he knows fine wine after sampling some of the best in the world through his racing career.
“I’ve seen that too many times: people who feel threatened by subordinates who know more than they do. I think it’s counterproductive in many ways to pretend to know things you don’t. You surround yourself with people who are the real experts. At Andretti Winery, I’m not the winemaker. I have a hell of a winemaker, Bob Pepi. He’s my engineer. I’m the one who enjoys the wine and approves the finished product.”
COMPETE TO WIN
That Andretti is fearless of failure or of much else comes as no surprise. “When you stick your nose out there, you’re going to get it bitten sometimes. I’ve had crashes. If it’s a mistake you made, just don’t repeat it. We’re not infallible. If you’re so afraid of failure you will never succeed. You have to take chances. I didn’t win races because I was conservative.”
Andretti never went into a race thinking he would just be good enough to make a respectable showing. “My mindset was always to win. Entering every race, you don’t always have all the tools at your disposal. Still, your attitude should be the same. If you go in there and think ‘I have no chance today,’ you damn well will not have any chance because you’re not going to fight for it. You never go in there with a mindset of failure or you will never win.”
Beyond attitude, Andretti says success requires seeing and seizing opportunities, as well as a strong work ethic.
In his early years, a driver for a top team was injured. Andretti was called to test a car, and his performance was impressive enough to replace the unfortunate driver on the team. “I was a young guy coming up and I showed promise; I got in my licks. It was career changing and propelled me to the next level,” he says. “But the key is to not just recognize the opportunity when it comes to you. When you’re given that opportunity, you have to really step up. It’s up to you to earn the position.”
THE PRICE OF SUCCESS
All the work and adversity makes the triumph that much sweeter, Andretti says. “For every negative, there’s a positive. It’s in everything. How you deal with life, outlook, how much energy you put into achieving something. That’s why I detest entitlement. Anything that’s worthwhile is going to call for some sacrifice. Nothing worthwhile will come to you without a price. People think in sports, you have different rules. You really don’t. It’s whatever motivates you,” he says.
Andretti doesn’t want to hear excuses for not pursuing your passions, either. He meets guys all the time who tell him they also could have been race drivers but their wives wouldn’t let them or some other excuse. Nonsense, Andretti says: “They didn’t really want it.”
Andretti did want it and he got it many times over. He and his brother Aldo lied about their age to race at a track near their house—they were 19 but had to be 21 to be legal. Converting a 1948 Hudson Hornet Sportsman into a stock car, they took turns racing and winning in secret their first season. They lied to their fearful father, who only found out when Aldo was seriously hurt the last race of the season. “We didn’t do it to defy him. We did it in spite of him,” Andretti says.
Aldo suffered a skull fracture, but recovered, took a year off and raced another 10 years. Another serious crash in which he suffered major facial injuries caused Aldo Andretti to leave racing for good. But he recovered, and passed on his love of racing to his son, who continued the family tradition.
TAKING NOTHING FOR GRANTED
Mario Andretti says he and his brother shared the same dreams, the same passion, yet Aldo wasn’t as lucky. “The question to me is, ‘Why am I so fortunate and why is he racing with a cloud over his head?’ That’s why I don’t take anything for granted. I’ve dodged quite a few bullets and sometimes, that’s how it goes. It’s hard to make sense,” he says.
His sons, grandson and nephew have had successful racing careers of their own. But their motivations aren’t the same because they grew up in a different world than his. Son Michael Andretti is “brilliant” and is now a team owner, Andretti says. “He has a career to be proud of—42 wins. His work ethic for sure was at least the same as mine, total commitment. But his motivation was different. His upbringing, his world was different than mine. His was, ‘My dad showed me the path and I want to do that.’ I made that point at a very early age with him. You have to do it for yourself.”
Andretti says he and Michael have different attitudes toward winning and losing. “If he wasn’t successful, he was totally miserable. I always looked at the brighter side. Whenever there is rain, there is sunshine.”
Although the checkered flag is “the ultimate definition of winning, of success,” Andretti has found satisfaction in his family successes and in his business pursuits. Although there are no pole positions or checkered fl ags in business, he says, “you have the sense, the feeling, you know what you’ve accomplished. You know whether you’ve been successful.”

Herbalife's Tips on How to Eat to Stay Warm

Press Release Source: Herbalife On Tuesday December 29, 2009, 2:00 pm EST
LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--While piling on the layers is one way to keep the winter chill away, certain foods can help warm us from the inside. Warm soups and hot beverages are a natural, but some foods actually stimulate heat production more than others.
As temperatures drop, appetites perk up. The cold, dark days of winter often bring on cravings for hearty comfort foods, warm beverages, and spicier dishes that held less appeal during the warm summer months. Our biology drives us to consume more calories in case food should become scarce, and to add a little extra padding to help us stay warm. But unlike our ancient ancestors, we live in heated homes and food is readily available - so we don’t need to pack away those extra calories.
“Whenever we eat and digest a meal, the body temperature rises – in a process called diet-induced thermogenesis, or DIT for short,” said Dr. Luigi Gratton, vice president of medical affairs at Herbalife. “But some foods stimulate heat production more than others. High protein foods, for example, increase DIT more than starchy or fatty foods, so they are more ‘warming,’” adds Gratton.
Pungent ingredients – like spicy ginger, chili, pepper and garlic – can aid circulation and generate warmth.
We’re more inclined to drink fluids when the weather is hot but we need plenty of fluids in the winter to warm and humidify cold, dry winter air.
So, let your warm winter coat warm you up from the outside, and try these tips to generate some heat from the inside out:
• Protein-rich dishes fuel the furnace to keep us warm. But choose low-fat proteins – fish, poultry and lean meats, or protein powder in soups or oatmeal - to avoid excess fat and calories.
• Turn to warm teas and soups to help hydrate you and keep air passages moisturized.
• Add an extra dash of spices and seasonings to your winter dishes.
• If you catch a cold or the flu, don’t forget the chicken soup. Studies show that it works better than other hot liquids to speed up the flow of mucus. It’s thought that the traditional aromatic seasonings in the soup - such as onion and pepper - travel in the vapors and help to open up clogged nasal passages.
